The posture of worship ( part 1)

The posture of worship refers to the approach, behavior, words, frame of mind, and attitude of worship. It also refers to the position or poses which a worshipper must take in the presence of His majesty. I will address ten different postures of worship below;

  1. Saying: What we say is very important in worship. Worship is focused on who God is, so our words in worship should be focused on declaring who He is. We see an example of what to say in worship in the book of Revelation chapter 4 verse 10;

The four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne, and worship him that liveth for ever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying, Thou art worthy, O Lord,

Worship is focused on who God is, so our words in worship should be focused on declaring who He is

…to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.

Revelation 4:10-11

Can you see that? These are the kind of words we are to use in worship because they declare the glory, honor and power of God. We see some other sayings of worship in the books of psalm.

A Song and Psalm for the sons of Korah. Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised in the city of our God, in the mountain of his holiness.

Psalm48:1

Great is the LORD and greatly to be praised; and his greatness is unsearchable. Psalm145:3 Great is our Lord, and of great power: his understanding is infinite.

Psalm147:5

A Psalm of David. Bless the LORD,O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name.

 Psalm103:1

The LORD is righteous in all his ways, and holy in all his works.

Psalm145:17

The LORD is good to all: and his tender mercies are over all his works. Psalm 145:9

For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.

Psalm 100:5 2.

  1. Singing: Singing is another posture in worship. God loves it when we make melody unto Him with our voices.

All the earth shall worship thee, and shall sing unto thee; they shall sing to thy name. Selah.

Psalm 66:4 3.

  1. Offering: Our offerings to God is another important posture of worship. True worship is always accompanied with an offering

Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name: bring an offering, and come before him: worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness.

1Chronicles 16:29

Then the king Nebuchadnezzar fell upon, and worshipped Daniel, and commanded that they should offer an oblation and sweet odours unto him.

Daniel 2:46 4.

  1. Bowing of the knee: It is also very important that you learn to bow your knees when it is time to worship. Bowing the knees is another sign or show of reverence and submission to God

And they smote him on the head with a reed, and did spit upon him, and bowing their knees worshipped him.

Mark 15:19

Although they were mocking Jesus in the scripture above, we see that the word worship could not have been used without the action of bowing of the knees.

For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named,

Ephesians 3:14-15 5.

  1. Standing: God is a King, so you cannot sit and worship Him. Throughout scriptures we never see a place where anyone sat during worship. Standing is therefore a very important posture of worship.

And Solomon stood before the altar of the LORD in the presence of all the congregation of Israel, and spread forth his hands toward heaven: And he said, LORD God of Israel, there is no God like thee, in heaven above, or on earth beneath, who keepest covenant and mercy with thy servants that walk before thee with all their heart:

1Kings 8:22-23

In the book of Leviticus chapter 19 verse 32, the Lord instructs the people to rise or stand before the old man as a sign of honor.

Thou shalt rise up before the hoary head, and honour the face of the old man, and fear thy God: I am the LORD.

Leviticus 19:32

If that should be done to the old man, what should we do to the LORD Himself, who is the ancient of days?

I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of days did sit, whose garment was white as snow, and the hair of his head like the pure wool: his throne was like the fiery flame ,and his wheels as burning fire

Daniel 7:9

It is an error to sit and worship God. You do not even sit to welcome your nation’s president who is just a man. What about God? I believe this is one of the reasons many churches do not see a manifestation of the glory of God. While some are worshipping with the right posture, others are just sitting watching. In our church, our worship leaders ensure and insist that during worship sessions everyone is standing. This is a show of honor and deference to the Lord. However, when sitting is necessary for instance in pregnancy or out of weariness, it is important that the one worshipping lifts up his or her hands.

Watch for part 2 where we will continue on more postures of worship
